![]() ![]() evil - but with entirely new characters (mostly) that are largely disconnected from people and events in preexisting stories, the High Republic represents a bold attempt to carve out a new place for stories in the Star Wars universe.Īnd with the era set to be featured in an upcoming streaming series, now is the perfect time to get on board! What is the High Republic? Image credit: Lucasfilm Ltd Featuring trappings familiar to Star Wars fans - there's Jedi and lightsabers and the Force, hyperspace travel, sinister villains, epic clashes of good vs. In particular, it seems ripe for a Jedi Academy style game.Since 2021, LucasFilm has released dozens of stories across numerous forms of media set in the 'High Republic' era of the Star Wars galaxy. I am particularly intrigued by the drengir as villains - they got some backlash for being plant based villains, but personally they are looking like nice and creepy foes.įinally, I just want to say, I really hope we get a game or two set this in time period. Still, overall I would say it looks like a strong start, and some of the preview material for future stuff looks promising. Similarly, I am hearing good things about the High Republic comic, but personally I wait for TPBs. I have heard good things about the junior novelizations, but I am busy enough I think I will wait on those at least, as they do seem rather focused and small scale. I think the book is actually really good at painting a vivid portrait of both chapter viewpoint characters and secondary characters - honestly, I grew more attached to some of them in a few sentences than I have to some main characters of entire stories. Now, I do get why other people wouldn't like the sheer number of characters so much, especially since the story so far has been about a disaster unfolding so quickly they don't really have time to do anything but react to it.but personally it works for me. ![]() Like, I have had trouble focusing when reading books lately, but not this one, has me hooked enough that I even stay up late reading it some nights, and I haven't done that in years. (Oh, and I suppose there are one or two tumblr posts attacking it from the other direction, particularly daring to portray the jedi postively, though again most stuff about it is really positive)Īlso about a third of the way through Light of the Jedi, and I absolutely loving it. And from what I hear even some of them have come around and admitted the High Republic stuff is pretty good once it actually came out, though I am not willing to risk filling my youtube recommendations with their junk to double check it. Yeah, from what I have seen pretty much everywhere is positive about it except certain youtube channels, which are not only obviously bigoted but blatantly clickbiaty who have tried to make this another front of a completely imaginary war between Filoni and Kennedy, the details of which approach Qanon levels of ridiculous. There is one striking thread that relates to this running through the text, which is that the common ethos expressed by all these characters as they pitch in to help out is "We are the Republic." I suspect this comes across as unexpectedly on-point to a reader who happens to be a frothing American reactionary at this particular time, and my personal response to them would be, bite me. At this point you just expect some unhinged hate for anything that actually has people with different genders and skin colors involved in the text, much less presenting it in the real-world media. Though there are, no mistake, a fair amount of Jedi heroics that involve fighting I don't think you have "Star Wars" if you take out the "Wars" part.įor the controversy, well. As a book, it suffers some from needing to introduce a huge cast as well as a galactic crisis, but it's got a lot of likable characters in it, and I like that it consciously drags Star Wars in a more hopepunk direction. Click to expand.I've only read Light of the Jedi so far. ![]()
